AbstractWhen working with a family in a remarriage, bringing into focus a broader context related to the family’s history (such as a previous divorce or widowhood) often reveals to the therapist a daunting diversity of ongoing processes, transformations, and issues requiring resolution. However, much depends on the perspective chosen and applied by all participants in the therapeutic process. We will discuss the advantages and pitfalls of a systemic view, the influence of the helping professional’s own positions and constructs, and possible paths toward resolution.
